In analog film, this refers to clusters of silver halide crystals in the emulsion which are visible because of spaces between the crystals. Digital noise can occur for a variety of reasons, and sometimes can be removed in post-production. Software such as DxO FilmPack can apply grain to images in post-production to imitate the characteristic styles of famous analog films.
